Holt Lacrosse has always been about blending skills and development. Often that means developing skills necessary to be a successful lacrosse player, which in turn helps develop skills necessary to be a successful person. In order to aid in this development, we incorporate characteristics such as teamwork, accountability, discipline, fitness, compassion, and conflict resolution into our activities. It’s what allows us to accomplish our mission of building the individual. Another aspect of building the individual is providing them with a greater sense for what will be expected of them in professional environments. As you might imagine, this is especially important in California where the employment landscape is vastly different than in many other states. Likely one of the largest issues facing young people today, and one of the most important things they can learn from youth sports basketball, is understanding the ins and outs of professional environments.

For example, as many young people will find, there are a host of licensing considerations that must be understood. In California, contractor license classifications california are designated with several classifications. Each designation means that the licensee is qualified to perform, supervise, and contract for a certain set of trades. Licensees may be designated for as many classifications as they are able to qualify for. To understand the nature of professional licenses it’s first necessary to understand what classifications exist. In Professional, and non-professional settings. While for many this seems like a rather simplistic concept, simply achieving excellence isn’t enough. You must also be constantly improving, evolving, and expanding your understanding in order to remain relevant. Understanding how to best obtain a license is one way to promote ongoing professional development.

Of course to relate back, and how does this apply to youth sports? Well, if you’ve paid attention to modern sports media you’ll realize that a large portion of it is dedicated to skill development. For young athletes, the question of whether to participate in sports is all but answered. They will, and they will be rather familiar with many of the rules and terminology used in a professional context. This also applies when speaking about those whose talents lie outside the world of sports. Those who have technical skills, or interpersonal skills – will be expected to perform at a high level, and will need to think critically about where they fit into the professional landscape.

Such understanding is required for more than business deals and employment contracts, it also applies to designations and qualifications. Understanding whether a person is Licensed, Certified, or Designated differently. Whether they are licensed in California DCA, Department of Consumer Affairs, or CSLC, Contractors State Licensing Board. Further, you need to know the nature of the qualifications based on the classification. For example: AS is “General Engineering Specialty.” (A) “General Engineering” means those fixed works that require specialized engineering knowledge and skill to construct or alter. Such work includes, but is not limited to, dams, bridges, tunnels, tanks, underground work, grade separations, pavements, grading and drainage.

The core skills instilled through youth sports may still be thought of as the building blocks for personal and community development when looked at through a different lens. As such, this is one of the primary reasons we incorporate such education into our programs.
